Constellium is partnering with schools near its Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Ravenswood, West Virginia plants to join a recycling movement to collect empty aluminum beverage cans as part of the 2 Million Cans Recycling Contest. Third grade students at L.E Willson and Fairplain elementary schools will compete with schools in 12 states across the U.S. on a quest to keep aluminum cans out of landfills and ensure they are recycled into new cans.
The contest is an exciting partnership with Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) and Recycling Is Like Magic! The competition, which runs October 1, 2024 through April 30, 2025, aims to inspire environmental awareness, hands-on learning, teamwork, and community engagement with young learners. Each school in the contest will earn money from the aluminum beverage cans collected and sold to a local scrap yard partner. Sponsored by CMI members, they will also receive prizes for achieving specific recycling goals throughout the year, and three schools will be awarded top prizes.
Constellium participated in the inaugural 1 Million Cans Recycling Contest for the 2023-24 school year when its location in Muscle Shoals sponsored L.E. Willson Elementary. “Constellium is excited to partner again with L.E Willson Elementary to teach students the value and importance of recycling, especially aluminum cans,” said Buddy Stemple, President of Constellium Muscle Shoals. “Aluminum cans are the most valuable material in the recycling bin and by ensuring they are made into new cans, we save energy compared to producing new material, and protect the environment.”
“Our Ravenswood team looks forward to collaborating with Fairplain Elementary students on an interactive educational program to inspire a lifetime of recycling, and which will help the school contribute to its fund for new playground equipment,” said Brian McCallie, Vice President of Operations at Constellium Ravenswood. “We also welcome the opportunity to compete with our colleagues in Muscle Shoals!”
Kickoff events will be hosted with students and staff at each school in October. Follow the contest leaderboard, take the Pledge to Recycle, and more on the 2 Million Cans Recycling Contest website.
