Constellium is a global leader designing and manufacturing innovative and high value-added aluminum products and solutions for a broad range of applications dedicated primarily to aerospace, automotive and packaging markets. Constellium Technology Center (C-TEC) based in Grenoble (Voreppe - 38) is Constellium’ s European research center with 246 employees and 20 nationalities.

Precipitation mechanisms in low-density Al-Cu-Li alloys after long exposure at 70-85°C for aerospace application

Al-Cu-Li alloys have experienced a strong development in the last 15 years for aerospace application because they meet new lightweighting requirements driven by CO2 emission reduction targets and the development of composite materials. In addition to their low density, they offer excellent mechanical properties that is not achieved in conventional alloys.

To further decrease the density of Al-Cu-Li alloys in order to lighten the aircraft, it would be beneficial to increase the Li content. However, the thermal stability of Al-Cu-Li alloys with high Li content is a challenge due to the precipitation during simulated in service thermal exposure at 70-85°C leading to a decrease in mechanical properties. The objective of the internship is to better understand the precipitation mechanisms during the simulated thermal exposure in service as a function of some process parameters as the ageing. The main tasks of the internship are:

  • Study the effect of thermal exposure on mechanical properties using tensile tests or hardness measurements
  • Analysis of microstructural evolution by conductivity, PTE, DSC, OCP and transmission electron microscopy. Some small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and atom probe tomography (APT) analyses could be also considered.
  • Establish links between mechanical properties and microstructural evolutions and study the impact of the ageing treatment on precipitation and thermal stability.

The internship will take place in SIMaP laboratory, in close collaboration with Constellium C-TEC. The trainee will need to be adaptable in order to work with different team, and to master different experimental techniques.
